Reducing Bias and Cognitive Overload in Job Search
Traditional job platforms often create unnecessary stress, confusion, and barriers for users with non-traditional career paths. This project focused on redesigning the job search experience to better support accessibility, inclusion, and user confidence through a more supportive and flexible interaction flow.
The goal was to create a platform that reduced cognitive overload, minimized bias during the hiring process, and made job searching feel more approachable for users facing systemic barriers.

Many existing job platforms prioritize rigid application structures and overwhelming interfaces that fail to support a wide range of users.
Research identified several key issues:

Cognitive overload caused by dense layouts and excessive filtering systems

Bias triggered by legal-name requirements and traditional work-history expectations

Confusing corporate language that reduced accessibility

High-pressure interaction flows that increased user anxiety

These barriers disproportionately affected users with non-linear career histories, neurodivergent users, first-generation immigrants, and individuals transitioning from unstable housing or incarceration.
Our team approached the project through an accessibility and equity-focused UX lens.

One of the core features introduced was a “Name-Blind” application option that temporarily removed identifying information during early-stage screening.

This insight directly influenced later iterations by improving search functionality and aligning interactions more closely with user expectations.

6. Reflection
One of the biggest takeaways from this project was understanding how strongly interface structure can affect emotional experience during high-stress situations.
Rather than treating accessibility as a checklist, this project focused on designing a system that felt supportive, flexible, and psychologically safer for users navigating difficult employment situations.
The project reinforced the importance of reducing friction, simplifying interactions, and designing systems that adapt to users rather than forcing users to adapt to systems.
